Kopthione Zn powder: An enemy of Micro-organisms

Adhesives, also known as glue, cement, mucilage, or paste, is any substance applied to one surface, or both surfaces, of two separate items that binds them together and resists their separation. The use of adhesives offers many advantages over binding techniques such as sewing, mechanical fastening, thermal bonding, etc. Whereas Sealant is a substance used to block the passage of fluids through the surface or joints or openings in materials, a type of mechanical seal. In building construction sealant is sometimes synonymous with caulking and also serve the purposes of blocking dust, sound and heat transmission. Sealants may be weak or strong, flexible or rigid, permanent or temporary. Sealants are not adhesives but some have adhesive qualities and are called adhesive- sealants or structural sealants.

A substantial amount of money is lost every year due to microbiological contamination of adhesives and sealants in their manufacturing facilities. Since contamination by microorganisms can occur at various points before, during and even after manufacture, early use of an effective preservative is essential. The key to formulating is to understand the function of an additive and its chemical or physical behaviour in the presence of other components in the adhesive or sealant. This is often not easy or simple. Sometimes very minor amounts of the preservative can have major effects on the adhesive, sealant and final product performance. The complexity of the biocide, and what happens at the interfaces of each, is of critical importance. The performance of a biocide is dependent upon a combination of microbiology and chemistry. There are four main factors that affect biocide performance in a system: system conditions (pH), compatibility with the system, microorganism type and microorganism strength.

One of the most effective biocide, which has all above mentioned properties and which is used by Adhesive and sealant formulators is Kumar organic?s Kopthione Zn powder. It is 97% pure Zinc Pyrithione powder. It is effective antifouling agent for controlling seaweed, bacteria, Fungi, yeast, molds and diatom slimes. It inhibits broad spectrum of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. It is hydrolytically stable between pH 4 and 8.5.

To conclude with, I can say Air, water, fire and earth are all necessary for the survival of mankind. However, these same necessities can also prove to be sources of great destruction when out of our control. The same principle holds true for the most ubiquitous creature on earth, the microorganism. These microbes are one of the reasons for great losses in many industries like adhesive and sealant industries due to contamination. To prevent from contamination of adhesive and sealants, use of antifungal biocide like Kopthione Zn powder is very essential.
