Copper pyrithione is Pyridinethione derivative, and it belong to a class of cyclic sulfur organo products containing sulfur atom (S) and often oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), hydrogen (H), as well as other elements, can find application for making biologically active agents such as antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal agents. Copper pyrithione is effective biocide used to control algae, fungi and bacteria.

Copper pyrithione Is non-mutagenic, and it is not expected to cause adverse reproductive or embryonic Effects. The concentrared form of copper pyrithione is moderately toxic if swallowed. Copper pyrithione is considered very toxic to aquatic organisms and plants but it rapidly degrades under sunlight and its presence in the environment will be for short period.
